One of the most common misconceptions we hear from people considering running a pub is this:
"But I don’t have any pub experience... surely I won’t be considered?"
Sound familiar?
Here’s the truth: experience is great, but it’s not the only thing that matters. Some of the most successful publicans we work with at Stonegate Pub Partners came from completely different walks of life.
From ex-teachers and retail managers to self-employed tradespeople and office-based professionals, our community is packed with people who simply leapt, brought their people skills to the table, and built thriving businesses from the ground up.
Because when it comes to running a pub, it's not about knowing everything from day one. It's about:
Being great with people
Having a clear vision for your venue
Thinking creatively
Rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in
And we've seen firsthand how these qualities can transform a pub into the beating heart of a community.
From Interviewee to Award Finalist in Just 13 Months
A perfect example of this? One of our publicans, Chris, recently became a finalist at the 2025 Great British Pub Awards for Pub of the Year.
Just over a year ago, during the interview process, Chris asked a question many of you might relate to:
"Will I even get a chance at this pub, considering I have no pub experience?"
The answer, from our team, was a resounding yes. And 13 months later, Chris is being recognised nationally for transforming his site, building community connections, and injecting life back into the local area.
Chris runs The Gower Inn in Parkmill, a picture-perfect spot where he’s created something truly unique. With no hospitality background, he leaned into his vision, thought creatively, and brought something new to the space. One of his standout ideas was launching a “pub within a pub”, giving visitors different experiences under one roof and creating more reasons for people to return.
But Chris didn’t stop there. He’s turned The Gower Inn into a buzzing hub of activity. Tuesday quiz nights bring in locals looking for a bit of midweek fun, and Friday live music has made the pub a must-visit spot for Swansea’s gig-goers. And let’s not forget the food, Chris and his team have been pushing boundaries with a bold, cheeky menu that includes everything from comforting classics to unexpected creations like the Afternoon Tea Burger: an 8oz patty topped with Emmental, candied bacon, balsamic strawberries, Chantilly cream and served in a scone. It sounds wild, but it works, and it’s already creating a stir online.

Beth Johns, one of our Regional Managers, recently shared his story on LinkedIn. She praised Chris for his passion and creative approach, and highlighted the welcoming atmosphere he and his team have cultivated. Her message was simple but powerful: "This is what happens when you think outside the box and believe in what you’re creating."
While every publican’s journey is different, Chris’s story is proof that the lack of pub experience doesn’t mean a lack of potential.
So, What Does It Take to Run a Pub?
Let’s break it down.
Yes, running a pub is hard work. You’ll need to get to grips with stock management, staff rotas, events, and financials. But you won’t be doing it alone. We provide training, guidance, and support every step of the way. And more importantly, what you bring as a person makes the biggest difference.
Here’s what we look for in a potential publican:
People-first mindset: You enjoy connecting with others and understand how to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Entrepreneurial spirit: You see the pub as your business and want to make it shine.
Creative thinking: From quiz nights to charity events, you’re full of ideas.
Resilience and drive: Let’s be honest, it’s not always easy. But if you’re committed, we’ll back you all the way.
We’ve seen people go from never having poured a pint to running busy, successful pubs in just a few months. It's all about mindset.
You Bring the Vision. We'll Bring the Support.
Whether you want to run a community-focused local, a food-led destination pub, or a live music venue, there’s no one-size-fits-all. It’s your vision, we’re just here to help you make it real.
From day one, you’ll be assigned a Regional Manager (like Beth!) who’ll get to know your goals and work with you on building your pub business. And while experience might help with the technical stuff, the most successful publicans are those who build real, lasting relationships with their customers.
Real Talk: You Don’t Need to Be a Hospitality Expert
We want to challenge the idea that running a pub is only for those with industry backgrounds. That outdated thinking is holding brilliant people back. People like you.
You don’t need to know every ale on the market. You don’t need to have run a bar before. You just need to care about making your pub a place people want to be.
And if the idea of that lights you up, you're already halfway there.
What's Next?
We’re always looking for people who are ready to take the leap, especially those who never thought this could be their path. Because when you bring the heart, the hustle and the willingness to learn, amazing things happen.
Chris’s journey is just one example of what's possible. And there are hundreds more stories like his across the UK.
So if you’ve ever found yourself thinking, "I’d love to run a pub, but I don’t have experience," let this blog be your nudge.
You might not have the background, but you absolutely have the potential.
No pub experience? No problem. Let's talk.
