North Walsham Pub and Community Theatre Earns National Recognition
A North Walsham pub that has become a true hub for its local community is celebrating national recognition after being shortlisted for two prestigious awards. The Great British Pub Awards has named Joseph Ballard's The Black Swan as a finalist in both the Best Community Pub and Best Pub for Entertainment categories.
Part of the our Pub Partners estate, The Black Swan has undergone an incredible transformation since Joseph took over the site in October 2023. What was once a traditional pub has evolved into a thriving community destination, combining great hospitality with a vibrant 100-seat theatre and a packed programme of events and activities.
Drawing on his background in theatre and community arts, Joseph saw an opportunity to create something truly unique in his hometown. With support from more than 60 local volunteers, the venue was revitalised, with residents helping to breathe new life into the pub and shape its future.
Today, the theatre hosts everything from touring productions and stand-up comedy to youth theatre performances, amateur dramatics and community-led events. Alongside its entertainment offering, The Black Swan also provides space for local groups, charities and wellbeing initiatives, making it an important asset for people across North Walsham.
The dual award nomination recognises not only the venue's commitment to entertainment but also the strong sense of belonging it has fostered within the community. For Joseph, the achievement reflects the collective efforts of everyone who has supported the project and helped turn The Black Swan into a destination that brings people together.
